When Do You Need This Test?

These are the symptoms and situations that indicate this test is the right next step.

📅

Irregular or absent periods

FSH and LH on day 2–3 differentiate PCOS (low-normal FSH, elevated LH:FSH ratio) from premature ovarian insufficiency (very high FSH) and hypothalamic amenorrhoea (low FSH and LH).

Hot flushes and night sweats

Perimenopausal symptoms — elevated FSH >25 IU/L with symptoms indicates the menopausal transition.

What This Test Checks

Understanding what each component of the test measures helps you understand your results.

What the test measures

This test analyses a blood/urine sample to detect specific markers relevant to your symptoms and health status. Our doctor explains all results in the context of your clinical picture.

Evidence-based interpretation

Normal vs abnormal ranges

Reference ranges are age, sex, and clinical-context dependent. Our doctors interpret every result in context — not just against a printed range.

Personalised interpretation

Next steps

A result that requires further action triggers a management plan on the same visit — medication, further tests, or referral — so you leave with clarity, not just a piece of paper.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the basic hormonal profile and the comprehensive assay?
The basic profile measures FSH, LH, and oestradiol — the core cycle-phase markers. The comprehensive assay adds testosterone, DHEAS, prolactin, AMH, progesterone, cortisol, and thyroid function — giving a complete hormonal picture.
My FSH came back very high. What does this mean?
A high day-2–3 FSH (>10–15 IU/L, varying by lab) indicates diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). It means the pituitary is working harder than usual to stimulate the ovaries. AMH alongside FSH gives the most complete picture of ovarian reserve.
