When Do You Need This Test?

These are the symptoms and situations that indicate this test is the right next step.

💛

Yellow eyes or jaundice

Acute hepatitis B infection causes jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, nausea, and dark urine — a profile panel determines the phase of infection.

😴

Persistent fatigue and loss of appetite

Chronic hepatitis B in the immune-active phase causes fatigue, malaise, and mild jaundice — often dismissed as stress.

👨‍👩‍👦

Family member with hepatitis B

Hepatitis B spreads within households. If a family member is positive, every household contact should be tested and non-immune members vaccinated.

Household contact screening
💍

Premarital or pregnancy planning

Hepatitis B testing is standard in premarital and antenatal screening — to protect the partner and unborn child.

Premarital essential
💉

Healthcare worker or exposure

Needlestick injuries or blood exposure in healthcare settings require urgent HBsAg testing and HBV DNA quantification.

Monitoring known HBV carrier

Annual liver function and HBV profile monitoring is essential for all HBV carriers to detect progression and guide treatment.

What This Test Checks

Understanding what each component of the test measures helps you understand your results.

HBsAg (Surface Antigen)

Positive = currently infected. The primary screening marker. Positive for 6+ months = chronic infection.

Current infection detected

Anti-HBs (Surface Antibody)

Positive = immune — either from vaccination (titre >10 mIU/mL) or from resolved past infection.

Immunity confirmed

HBeAg & Anti-HBe

HBeAg positive = high viral replication, high infectivity. Anti-HBe positive = lower replication, better prognosis in most patients.

Replication phase identified

Anti-HBc (Core Antibody)

Positive = past or current infection. IgM anti-HBc = acute infection; IgG anti-HBc = past/chronic.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I tested HBsAg positive. What does that mean?
HBsAg positive means you are currently infected with hepatitis B virus. If it has been positive for more than 6 months, this is chronic infection. A full profile panel tells us whether you are in the immune-tolerant, immune-active, or inactive carrier phase — which determines whether treatment is needed.
My anti-HBs is positive. Does that mean I'm protected?
Yes — anti-HBs >10 mIU/mL indicates immunity, either from vaccination or from a resolved past infection. You are protected and do not need vaccination.
Can hepatitis B be transmitted through normal household contact?
Yes — HBV is transmitted through blood, sexual contact, and mother-to-child at birth. It can also spread within households through shared razors, toothbrushes, or minor cuts. All household contacts of a carrier should be tested and vaccinated if not immune.
