What Are Keloids?

A keloid is a raised, thickened scar that grows beyond the boundary of the original wound. It forms when the skin produces too much collagen while healing from an injury — such as a piercing, cut, burn, surgery, or even acne.

Keloids are benign (non-cancerous) but they do not fade on their own. They can keep growing over months or years, may feel itchy, tender or firm, and can be cosmetically distressing — especially on visible areas like the earlobes, chest and shoulders.

Benign, But Persistent

Keloids are not cancerous, but they rarely shrink on their own and often need treatment to improve.

More Common in Darker Skin

Keloids are far more frequent in people with darker skin tones and often run in families.

Triggered by Injury

They often follow ear piercings, surgery, burns, acne or any break in the skin.

Treatable & Manageable

Steroid injections and ointments can flatten, soften and reduce keloids over a course of treatment.

Important: What Our Treatment Covers

We treat keloids with steroid injections and prescription ointments — non-surgical methods that flatten and soften the scar. We do not perform surgical keloid excision. Very large, fast-growing or complex keloids that may need surgery combined with radiotherapy will be assessed and, where appropriate, referred to a specialist.

Where Keloids Develop

Keloids tend to form on areas with higher skin tension or after a specific injury. These are the most common sites we treat.

Very common after ear piercing

Chest

Sternum and central chest area

Shoulders

Especially after vaccination or injury

Upper Back

From acne, surgery or injury

Jaw & Neck

Along the jawline and beard area

Surgical Scars

Including C-section & operation sites

Burn Scars

Healed burns can thicken into keloids

Not sure if your scar is a keloid?

Not every raised scar is a keloid — some are hypertrophic scars, which stay within the wound boundary and respond differently. Our doctor will examine and diagnose your scar before recommending treatment. WhatsApp us a clear photo for a quick informal assessment.

Our Treatment Methods

Our doctor will choose the right approach based on the size, age and location of your keloid — often using injections and ointments together for the best result.

01
Steroid Injections

Corticosteroid (steroid) is injected directly into the keloid. It works by breaking down excess collagen, flattening and softening the scar while easing itching and tenderness. This is the most effective option for most keloids.

  • Flattens and softens raised scars
  • Reduces itching, pain and redness
  • Quick in-clinic procedure
  • Usually repeated every 3–4 weeks
  • Often combined with ointments
10 – 15 mins per session
02
Prescription Ointments

Doctor-prescribed topical treatments — such as silicone-based gels and other scar-targeting ointments — are applied at home to help flatten, smooth and fade the keloid over time. Ideal for smaller or newer scars and as support between injections.

  • No needles — applied at home
  • Best for small or early keloids
  • Helps maintain injection results
  • Softens texture and reduces itch
  • Doctor-supervised plan

Frequently Asked Questions

Do keloid injections hurt?
There is a brief sting as the steroid is injected into the keloid, but it is over quickly and most patients tolerate it well. For larger or more sensitive keloids, we can take steps to make you more comfortable. Any soreness usually settles within a day.
How many injection sessions will I need?
Keloids rarely respond to a single injection. Most people need several sessions, usually spaced about 3–4 weeks apart, to gradually flatten and soften the scar. Your doctor will estimate the number based on the size and age of your keloid at your first visit.
Will the keloid go away completely?
Treatment can significantly flatten, soften and shrink a keloid and relieve itching or tenderness, but it may not vanish entirely, and the skin colour or texture can remain slightly different. Keloids can also recur, so some people benefit from ongoing maintenance. We'll set realistic expectations before starting.
What's the difference between injections and ointments?
Steroid injections are the most effective option and work from inside the scar — best for raised, established keloids. Prescription ointments are applied at home and work more gradually — best for smaller or newer scars and for maintaining results between injections. Many patients use both together.
Can ointments alone treat my keloid?
For small, flat or very early keloids, prescription ointments alone can help. Larger, raised or older keloids usually respond better to injections, with ointments supporting the result. Our doctor will advise which approach suits your scar.
How soon will I see results?
Improvement is gradual. Many patients notice the keloid becoming softer and flatter over a few sessions across several weeks. Itching and tenderness often ease earlier than the visible change in size.
Do you perform surgical keloid removal?
No — our treatment is non-surgical, using injections and ointments. Surgery alone has a high chance of the keloid returning, often larger. If your keloid is very large or complex and surgery is the better option, we'll assess and refer you to an appropriate specialist.
How much does keloid treatment cost?
Cost depends on the size of the keloid and the number of sessions required. We provide transparent pricing per session during your consultation — there are no hidden charges. Call or WhatsApp us for a general price guide.
