Premarital screening gives both partners the information they need to enter marriage with clarity — about genotype compatibility, reproductive health, and any infectious diseases that are better known about and managed early. At Mascot Healthcare, Akoka, we offer comprehensive premarital screening from ₦5,000. By appointment, same day, confidential.
The most important premarital test in Nigeria. Identifies whether you are AA, AS, AC, SS, or SC. Two AS individuals have a 1-in-4 chance of having a child with sickle cell disease (SS). Knowing before marriage allows informed decision-making.
Your ABO blood group and whether you are Rhesus positive or negative. Rhesus incompatibility between mother and baby can cause haemolytic disease of the newborn — manageable when known in advance.
An HIV test before marriage is recommended for both partners. HIV in pregnancy is manageable with antiretroviral therapy — mother-to-child transmission is preventable when diagnosed and treated.
Hepatitis B is endemic in Nigeria — approximately 8–11% of the population are carriers, many without symptoms. Both partners being tested allows vaccination planning (for the non-immune partner) and treatment counselling.
Syphilis testing is recommended for all premarital couples. A broader STI panel (chlamydia, gonorrhoea) is available where relevant.
A baseline FBC identifies anaemia (very common in Nigerian women), abnormal white cell counts, and platelet disorders — all relevant to pregnancy planning.
Baseline fasting blood glucose to identify pre-diabetes or undiagnosed diabetes — particularly important before pregnancy, as poorly controlled diabetes significantly increases pregnancy risk.
Pelvic scan to identify fibroids, PCOS, or ovarian cysts that may affect fertility; cervical screening (VIA); hormonal assessment if irregular cycles; rubella immunity check.
