Contraceptive Methods Available at Mascot Healthcare

Combined oral contraceptive pill

The most widely known method. Taken daily, highly effective (99%+ when taken correctly). Also used to treat painful periods, PCOS, and acne. Several formulations available — our doctors match you to the right one based on your medical history.

Prescription same visit

Progestogen-only pill (POP / mini-pill)

For women who cannot take oestrogen — breastfeeding mothers, smokers over 35, women with migraines with aura, or hypertension. Taken daily, slightly less forgiving of missed doses than the combined pill.

Prescription same visit

Depo-Provera (injectable)

A progesterone injection given every 3 months. Highly effective (99%+). No daily pill to remember. Periods may stop completely — many women consider this a benefit. Fertility may take 6–12 months to return after stopping.

Injection given same visit

Contraceptive implant (Nexplanon / Implanon)

A small rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm, effective for 3 years. Set-and-forget contraception. Immediately reversible when removed. Mascot Healthcare inserts and removes implants.

Insertion done same visit

IUD — copper (non-hormonal)

A small copper device fitted inside the uterus, effective for 5–10 years. No hormones — suitable for women who want hormone-free contraception or who are breastfeeding. Mascot Healthcare fits and removes copper IUDs.

Fitted same visit

IUD — Mirena (hormonal)

A progesterone-releasing IUD effective for 5 years. Often improves heavy or painful periods significantly — many women use it for this reason regardless of contraceptive need.

Fitted same visit — reduces heavy periods

Questions

Contraception FAQs

Can I get emergency contraception at Mascot Healthcare?
Yes. Emergency contraception (the 'morning-after pill' — levonorgestrel or ulipristal) is available. Most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, with some effectiveness up to 120 hours (5 days). A copper IUD fitted within 5 days is the most effective emergency contraception.
I'm breastfeeding. What contraception can I use?
Breastfeeding women should avoid combined hormonal methods (oestrogen-containing pills). Safe options include: progestogen-only pill (POP), Depo-Provera injection, implant, and IUDs (both copper and Mirena). Our doctors will guide you based on your individual situation.
I've been on the pill for 5 years. Should I take a break?
The concept of a 'pill break' is not medically necessary. The combined pill is safe to take continuously for many years in suitable women. However, if you've been using it primarily for contraception and your situation or health has changed, it is worth a review consultation.
Does the IUD insertion hurt?
IUD insertion causes cramping — often described as strong period pain — that lasts during the procedure (about 5 minutes) and for 1–2 hours afterwards. We advise taking ibuprofen 1 hour before. Most women find it very manageable. Our doctors are experienced in minimising discomfort.
