When Do You Need This Test?

These are the symptoms and situations that indicate this test is the right next step.

😴

Always tired and weak

Low PCV indicates anaemia — insufficient red cells to carry oxygen to tissues, causing fatigue, weakness, and breathlessness.

Antenatal anaemia screening

PCV is checked at every antenatal visit — anaemia in pregnancy increases risk of preterm birth and maternal complications.

Known sickle cell disease

PCV monitors baseline haemoglobin level and helps identify a sickling crisis — rapid drop in PCV.

Before surgery

A preoperative PCV screen ensures haemoglobin is adequate for safe surgery — low PCV may require pre-surgical iron therapy or transfusion.

Malaria with suspected anaemia

Malaria destroys red blood cells — PCV alongside malaria RDT quantifies the degree of anaemia.

What This Test Checks

Understanding what each component of the test measures helps you understand your results.

What the test measures

This test analyses a blood/urine sample to detect specific markers relevant to your symptoms and health status. Our doctor explains all results in the context of your clinical picture.

Evidence-based interpretation

Normal vs abnormal ranges

Reference ranges are age, sex, and clinical-context dependent. Our doctors interpret every result in context — not just against a printed range.

Personalised interpretation

Next steps

A result that requires further action triggers a management plan on the same visit — medication, further tests, or referral — so you leave with clarity, not just a piece of paper.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal PCV?
Normal PCV: women 36–48%; men 41–53%. Values below these indicate anaemia. In Nigeria, a PCV below 30% in adults or 33% in pregnant women warrants investigation and treatment.
What is the difference between PCV and haemoglobin?
PCV (haematocrit) measures the percentage of blood volume occupied by red cells. Haemoglobin (Hb) measures the concentration of the oxygen-carrying protein directly. Both assess anaemia but measure different things — PCV × 3 ≈ haemoglobin in g/dL (approximately).
