When Do You Need This Test?

These are the symptoms and situations that indicate this test is the right next step.

🌡️

High fever with chills and sweating

Cyclic fever with rigors — classic malaria. Sustained rising fever — classic typhoid. Both can coexist in Lagos patients.

🤕

Severe headache with body aches

Prominent headache and myalgia with fever is common in both malaria and typhoid — testing distinguishes them.

Malaria RDT + blood film
🤢

Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite

Gastrointestinal symptoms with fever — more prominent in typhoid than malaria, but both can cause them.

Malaria + Widal + FBC
😩

Weakness and inability to function

Profound prostration — both diseases cause it; severity and pattern distinguish malaria from typhoid.

Already on treatment but not improving

Failing to improve after 48–72 hours of antimalarials or antibiotics warrants repeat testing — resistance or wrong diagnosis.

What it measures

What This Test Checks

Understanding what each component of the test measures helps you understand your results.

What the test measures

This test analyses a blood/urine sample to detect specific markers relevant to your symptoms and health status. Our doctor explains all results in the context of your clinical picture.

Evidence-based interpretation

Normal vs abnormal ranges

Reference ranges are age, sex, and clinical-context dependent. Our doctors interpret every result in context — not just against a printed range.

Personalised interpretation

Next steps

A result that requires further action triggers a management plan on the same visit — medication, further tests, or referral — so you leave with clarity, not just a piece of paper.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need both a malaria test AND a Widal test?
Malaria and typhoid can coexist in the same patient, have overlapping symptoms, and both require specific treatment. Testing for both simultaneously gives the most complete picture and avoids empirical combination treatment that increases antibiotic resistance.
My Widal test was positive last time too. Is typhoid recurring?
A previous positive Widal can remain positive for months or years after treatment — this is one of the Widal test's major limitations. A positive Widal needs to be interpreted in the context of current symptoms, titre level, and a comparison with your previous results. This is why we recommend blood culture for definitive typhoid diagnosis when the clinical picture is uncertain.
