We Treat the Infection — and Refer to the Dentist.

We are not dentists — but a dental abscess or tooth infection can cause severe pain, facial swelling, and systemic illness that needs immediate medical treatment. What We Do for Dental Pain at Mascot Healthcare

Mascot Healthcare is a primary care clinic — we don't perform dental procedures. But dental infections cause systemic illness, and many patients in Lagos need immediate antibiotic treatment before they can see a dentist. We fill that gap.

Dental abscess

A dental abscess — pus collection at the root of the tooth or in the gum — causes severe, throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, and systemic illness. First-line treatment is antibiotics: amoxicillin 500mg three times daily for 5–7 days (or co-amoxiclav if more severe). Analgesia (ibuprofen + paracetamol combination). Urgent dental referral for the definitive procedure (drainage, root canal, or extraction).

Pericoronitis

Infection around a partially erupted wisdom tooth — extremely common in young Lagos adults. Causes severe pain, trismus (difficulty opening the mouth), and cervical lymph node swelling. Treated with metronidazole + amoxicillin and dental referral.

Facial cellulitis from dental source

A dental infection spreading to the face causing significant facial swelling requires urgent hospital admission for IV antibiotics. This is a serious complication — come in immediately.

⚠️ Seek emergency care if: Facial swelling is causing difficulty swallowing or breathing, the swelling is descending into the neck, or you have a high fever with a stiff neck alongside dental pain. Dental infections can spread to the floor of the mouth (Ludwig's angina) — a life-threatening emergency.

Our dental referral network

We have referral relationships with reputable dental practitioners in the Yaba–Akoka area. Our referral letter includes your clinical findings, medications prescribed, and the specific dental procedure required — so you are not starting from scratch when you see the dentist.

Questions

FAQs

Can Mascot Healthcare treat my tooth?
We can treat the infection (antibiotics) and manage pain (prescription analgesia) — but the definitive treatment of the tooth (drainage, root canal, extraction) requires a dentist. We bridge the gap and refer you with a full clinical letter.
How long before my antibiotics start working for a dental abscess?
Most patients notice improvement within 24–48 hours of starting antibiotics. If swelling is worsening or you develop difficulty swallowing after 48 hours on antibiotics, come back in immediately.
