Understanding the Side Effects of Abortion Pills — And Why Post-Abortal Care Matters

Abortion pills (also called medical abortion) are a safe and commonly used method to terminate early pregnancies. However, like any medication, they come with side effects, some expected and temporary, others that may signal a need for medical attention.

What Are Abortion Pills?

Abortion pills typically involve two medications:

  • Mifepristone, which blocks pregnancy hormones.
  • Misoprostol, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

This combination is most effective within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy and is widely used around the world.

Common Side Effects of Abortion Pills

  1. Bleeding and Cramping
    • Heavy bleeding is part of the process and can last for several hours.
    • Cramping may be severe for some, similar to a heavy period or miscarriage.
  2. Nausea, Vomiting, and Diarrhoea
    • These symptoms usually subside within a day or two after taking Misoprostol.
  3. Fever or Chills
    • A low-grade fever is common but should not last more than 24 hours.
  4. Fatigue
    • The body undergoes both physical and emotional stress. It's normal to feel tired or drained.
  5. Emotional Reactions
    • Some people may feel relief; others may feel sadness, guilt, or anxiety. These emotional reactions are valid and may need attention too.

When to Seek Medical Help

Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Bleeding that soaks more than two pads per hour for two consecutive hours.
  • Severe abdominal pain that doesn’t improve with medication.
  • Fever over 38°C (100.4°F) lasting more than 24 hours.
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge (a sign of infection).
  • No bleeding at all within 24 hours of taking Misoprostol.
