Nigerian Diet Guide for Diabetes
Managing blood sugar without giving up the foods you love
Diabetes does not mean the end of Nigerian food. It means eating smarter โ adjusting portions, cooking methods, and meal timing so blood sugar stays stable. This guide shows how to eat eba, rice, yam, and plantain without spiking glucose.
Signs and Symptoms
โ Post-meal blood sugar above 10 mmol/L (180 mg/dL)
โ Fasting blood sugar above 7 mmol/L (126 mg/dL)
โ Fatigue after meals โ especially high-carb meals
โ HbA1c above 6.5% (confirms diabetes) or 5.7โ6.4% (prediabetes)
โ Weight gain despite trying to eat less
When to Seek Help
New diabetes diagnosisSee a doctor or dietitian to get a personalised meal plan based on your medications and current glucose levels.
Blood sugar swingsIf glucose is very high or very low despite eating 'well', your carb intake or meal timing needs individual adjustment.
Kidney diseaseDiabetic kidney disease requires a protein- and potassium-restricted diet โ do not self-manage this; see a nephrology dietitian.
Pregnancy with diabetesGestational diabetes has stricter glucose targets and requires specialist dietary supervision.
Tests & Diagnosis
๐งช Fasting blood glucose
Morning test before eating โ target <7 mmol/L for most people with diabetes.
๐งช 2-hour post-meal glucose
Measures glucose response to your typical meal โ target <10 mmol/L.
๐งช HbA1c every 3โ6 months
Reflects average glucose over 3 months โ target <7% for most adults with type 2 diabetes.
๐งช Kidney function (eGFR, creatinine)
Guides protein and potassium limits in the diet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I eat pounded yam?
Yes โ in a smaller portion than before. One fist-sized ball with plenty of egusi or vegetable soup is manageable for most people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes. Check your blood sugar 2 hours after to know your personal response.
Is eba better than rice for blood sugar?
Neither is ideal in large portions. Eba (garri) has a high glycaemic index. Small portions of either, eaten with protein and vegetables, are more important than the choice of food.
Can I eat fruit?
Yes, but choose whole fruit over juice. Pawpaw, cucumber, tomatoes, and garden eggs are low sugar. Limit very sweet fruits like ripe banana, mango, and pineapple to small portions.
What about agidi (ogi/pap)?
Pap made from maize is moderate glycaemic index. Unsweetened pap with milk is a reasonable breakfast โ just do not add a lot of sugar.
Is honey safer than sugar for diabetics?
No. Honey raises blood sugar similarly to table sugar. Avoid or use very sparingly.
