The Lagos STI burden

STIs in Lagos — What the Data Shows

Lagos carries a significant STI burden — driven by population density, limited routine testing, and high rates of asymptomatic infection. Key facts for Lagos men:

  • HIV prevalence in Lagos is approximately 1.4% — lower than the national average but representing hundreds of thousands of people, many unaware of their status
  • Hepatitis B prevalence in Nigeria is 8–11% — one of the highest in the world. Most carriers are unaware. Hepatitis B causes cirrhosis and liver cancer if untreated
  • Gonorrhoea in Lagos has very high rates of ciprofloxacin resistance (>80% in some studies) — meaning the antibiotic dispensed at most Lagos pharmacies will not work
  • Chlamydia causes no symptoms in 50% of infected men — testing is the only way to know
  • Syphilis is resurging globally and in Nigeria — including among young adults

Questions

STI testing FAQs for men

How much is an STI test in Lagos?
A confidential STI consultation at Mascot Healthcare is available on enquiry. Individual tests are charged at standard laboratory rates. A full STI panel (gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B) is available — call for current package pricing.
Will my test results be shared with anyone?
No. Your test results are completely confidential. They are not shared with your employer, family, partner, or any third party without your explicit written consent.
I have no symptoms. Is testing still worthwhile?
Yes — especially for HIV, chlamydia, and hepatitis B, which are frequently asymptomatic. Knowing your status allows early treatment (preventing progression for HIV), clearance confirmation, and informed decisions about safe sex and partner notification.
I tested negative. How long should I wait before trusting the result?
Most STI tests become accurate 2–4 weeks after exposure (the 'window period'). HIV has a window period of up to 3 months with third-generation tests; 45 days with fourth-generation tests (which we use). If you tested within the window period, a repeat test at 3 months gives definitive confirmation.
