MRI Scan in Nigeria โ€” What It Shows and Common Fears

Everything you need to know about MRI โ€” the most detailed imaging test available

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves (no radiation) to create extremely detailed images of the body's internal structures โ€” particularly soft tissues, the brain, spinal cord, joints, and abdominal organs. MRI is far superior to CT for neurological conditions, musculoskeletal problems, pelvic organs, and detailed soft tissue assessment. In Nigeria, MRI is available at tertiary hospitals and private imaging centres in major cities. Many patients are anxious about MRI โ€” the noisy, enclosed machine, the duration, and fears about the strong magnet. This guide addresses these concerns and helps patients prepare.

Signs and Symptoms

โœ“ MRI is ordered for: brain and spinal cord assessment (stroke, tumour, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy), musculoskeletal (joint, disc, ligament, tendon), liver assessment (characterising lesions found on CT/ultrasound), prostate, pelvis and gynaecological conditions, breast MRI for cancer screening
โœ“ No radiation โ€” safe for most people including children and pregnant women (with some precautions)
โœ“ Takes 20โ€“60 minutes โ€” longer than CT. Cannot be rushed

Risk Factors

When to Seek Help

Brain or spinal cord symptomsWeakness, numbness, seizures, severe headache, visual change โ€” neurological MRI often provides diagnosis unavailable from CT
Multiple sclerosis investigationMRI of brain and spinal cord shows MS plaques โ€” the key diagnostic investigation for MS
Knee or shoulder pain not improving with conservative treatmentMRI of joint โ€” identifies meniscal tears, ligament rupture, rotator cuff tears before surgery
Liver lesion found on ultrasound or CT requiring characterisationMRI liver with hepatobiliary specific contrast (Primovist) provides definitive lesion characterisation
Prostate cancer stagingMultiparametric MRI (mpMRI) before biopsy โ€” identifies suspicious areas and guides targeted biopsy

Tests & Diagnosis

๐Ÿงช MRI sequences โ€” what the report means
T1-weighted: bright fat, dark fluid. Used for anatomy and post-contrast enhancement. T2-weighted: bright fluid, bright oedema. Most sensitive for pathology โ€” inflammation, oedema, tumour appear bright. FLAIR: fluid attenuated inversion recovery โ€” suppresses CSF signal, highlights periventricular white matter lesions (MS, vasculitis)
๐Ÿงช MRI brain terms
White matter hyperintensities (WMH): bright T2 spots โ€” small vessel ischaemia from hypertension, normal ageing, MS. Diffusion restriction (DWI): restricted diffusion = acute stroke. Enhancement (post-gadolinium bright areas) = blood-brain barrier breakdown from tumour, inflammation, abscess
๐Ÿงช MRI spine terms
Disc herniation: protrusion of disc material compressing nerve root. Cord signal change (T2 bright): myelopathy โ€” urgent. Vertebral enhancement: infection (discitis/osteomyelitis) or metastasis
๐Ÿงช Gadolinium contrast
IV contrast used in some MRI scans to highlight blood-brain barrier breakdown, enhance tumours and inflammation. Generally very safe. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis: a rare serious complication in patients with eGFR < 30 โ€” avoid gadolinium in severe CKD or use macrocyclic agents

Treatment Options

1
Preparing for MRI in Nigeria
Remove all metallic objects (jewellery, hair clips, underwire bras). Inform technologist of all implants, previous surgery, and any metal foreign bodies. Disclose kidney problems (for gadolinium decision). For claustrophobia: request open MRI or ask about sedation options
2
Cost of MRI in Nigeria
Brain MRI: โ‚ฆ80,000โ€“โ‚ฆ200,000 depending on centre. Spine MRI: similar. Joint MRI: โ‚ฆ70,000โ€“โ‚ฆ150,000. Some NHIA/HMO health plans cover MRI โ€” check before paying out-of-pocket
3
If you cannot tolerate the enclosed MRI tunnel
Open MRI machines (lower field strength, still useful). Oral sedation (diazepam 5โ€“10mg taken 30 minutes before). General anaesthesia for children or profoundly claustrophobic adults. Breathing techniques and ear protection (the machine is very noisy)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MRI dangerous if I have a metal filling or crown?
Dental fillings and crowns are generally safe in MRI โ€” they may cause minor image distortion near the mouth but do not present a safety risk. Orthodontic braces can cause local image distortion. Always declare dental hardware to the technologist who will advise.
Can MRI tell if a tumour is cancerous?
MRI can characterise the size, location, and features of a tumour โ€” providing important clues about whether it is benign or malignant. However, definitive diagnosis of cancer requires tissue biopsy and histopathology. MRI guides the biopsy (targeting the most suspicious area) and stages the cancer (showing local invasion and regional nodes), but imaging alone cannot replace pathology.
Will I hear or feel anything during MRI?
The machine makes loud banging and knocking sounds during scanning (from the gradient coils) โ€” ear protection (foam earplugs or headphones) is always provided. You will not feel anything from the magnetic field or radio waves. You must remain completely still throughout โ€” movement blurs images. You can breathe normally; for some abdominal scans you may be asked to hold your breath briefly.
How long will it take to get MRI results in Nigeria?
A doctor's written report becomes available at a pace that depends on urgency โ€” emergency scans (stroke, trauma) are prioritised over routine scans. You receive images on a CD or via a digital link. Your referring doctor interprets the report in the context of your clinical picture โ€” bring the report and CD to your follow-up appointment.
