This scan can be a pelvic ultrasound or a transvaginal ultrasound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important finding in this stage is to ascertain normal implantation of the early pregnancy at its expected location inside the womb cavity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any abnormal deviation from this may be further investigated with follow up ultrasound scans and other laboratory tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--2\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">Dating Scan<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically done between 8 to 12 weeks since your last menstrual period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scan checks  for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the accurate age (Estimated gestational age, EGA) and due date(Expected date of delivery, EDD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fetal heart beat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>multiple gestation(twins or triplets).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nuchal translucency; which assesses he risk of downs syndrome in the baby.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The expected due date from this stage is the most accurate you will get through out the pregnancy and can be referenced and compared to further growth scans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--3\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">Anatomy\/Anomaly scan<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some women may be required to do an anatomy scan between 18 to 22 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultrasound scan checks for any gross anomaly, the sex, gestational age, placenta location and amniotic fluid level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings and recommendations are communicated to the patient and referring physician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--4\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">Growth scans<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on your antenatal provider guidelines, you may be required to do some pregnancy scans at intervals to assess the baby&#8217;s growth and weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The baby&#8217;s estimated gestational age and expected due date my be less accurate compared to the 1st trimester values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other scans are also follow up to reassess previous findings, ascertain fetal wellbeing or to investigate specific symptoms in pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--5\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">Biophysical profile<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly done after 30 weeks gestational age when there is need to assess the fetus health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scan checks for the baby&#8217;s breathing movement, body movement, limb tone and amniotic fluid.
