It’s All About How Tissue Reflects Sound<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ultrasound creates images from echoes<\/strong> \u2014 sound waves bouncing back off tissues. Different tissues reflect sound differently, producing lighter or darker areas on the screen. The “-echoic” words simply describe brightness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Key Terms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Echogenic<\/strong>
\nMeans a structure produces echoes<\/strong> and appears bright on the scan. Many normal tissues are echogenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyperechoic<\/strong> (hyper = more<\/em>)
\nBrighter than surrounding tissue<\/strong> \u2014 reflects a lot of sound. Bone, gallstones, and calcium deposits appear hyperechoic, often with a dark “shadow” behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
