If the sonographer can’t get all the views they need, here’s what happens.

Why Position Matters

Ultrasound needs a clear line of sight to the part being examined. If a baby is:

Facing your spine (making the face hard to see)

Curled up tightly

Lying low in the pelvis

Covering the face with hands

In a breech or awkward position

…then certain measurements or anatomy checks may be difficult or impossible in that moment. This is extremely common and rarely means anything is wrong.

What the Sonographer Will Try First

Experienced sonographers have several tricks to encourage a baby to move:

Repositioning you — turning onto your side, or standing up and walking around briefly

A short break before trying again

Applying gentle pressure with the probe to nudge the baby

Sometimes suggesting a snack or drink, as a change in your blood sugar can prompt movement (check with the clinic first)

Waiting a few minutes for the baby to shift naturally

If They Still Can’t Complete the Scan

If the baby simply won’t cooperate, the sonographer may:

Ask you to return for a follow-up scan a few days or a week later, when the baby will be in a different position

Complete what they can and note which views need rechecking

Being asked to come back is a routine, precautionary step — it is not a sign that something is wrong. It simply ensures every check is done properly.

Try Not to Feel Discouraged

It can be frustrating to make a return trip, especially when you were hoping to see your baby or find out the sex. But a thorough scan is worth the wait, and the second visit often goes smoothly.

This article is for general information only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Ready to Book Your Ultrasound Scan?

Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka (Yaba), Lagos offers ultrasound scans by appointment only, Monday–Saturday, 9am–5pm.
