If you’ve been told to arrive for your pelvic ultrasound with a full bladder, there’s good science behind the discomfort.<\/p>\n

The Bladder Is a "Window"<\/h2>\n

Ultrasound waves travel beautifully through fluid but poorly through gas. A full bladder does two important jobs:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It pushes gas-filled bowel loops out of the pelvis<\/strong>, clearing the view.<\/li>\n
  2. It acts as an acoustic window<\/strong>, letting sound waves pass through to reach the uterus, ovaries, or early pregnancy behind it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Without a full bladder, these structures can be nearly impossible to see clearly on a transabdominal scan.<\/p>\n

    How Full Is "Full"?<\/h2>\n

    Most clinics recommend drinking about 750ml\u20131 litre of water (4\u20136 glasses), finishing roughly one hour before your appointment \u2014 and not emptying your bladder until after the scan. You should feel a comfortable urge to urinate, not pain.<\/p>\n

    What If I Can’t Hold It?<\/h2>\n

    Tell the reception team \u2014 don’t suffer in silence. They may scan you sooner, or allow you to partially empty and refill. If your bladder simply won’t fill adequately, your sonographer may recommend a transvaginal scan instead, which doesn’t require a full bladder at all.<\/p>\n
