Hello Friend! A burning feeling when you pee, or a change in discharge, sends a lot of people straight to the pharmacy for “something for infection.” The trouble is, these symptoms have several very different causes \u2014 and the right treatment depends entirely on which one you have. Here’s how to think about it.<\/p>\n\n\n

Three Common Culprits<\/h2>\n\n\n

1. Urinary tract infection (UTI).<\/strong> Usually causes burning when urinating, a frequent and urgent need to go, and sometimes cloudy or strong-smelling urine and lower-belly discomfort. A UTI is generally not sexually transmitted, but the symptoms overlap heavily with STIs.<\/p>\n\n\n

2. Vaginitis (in women).<\/strong> Conditions like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections cause changes in discharge, itching, odour and irritation. Some are not sexually transmitted \u2014 but one cause, trichomoniasis, is<\/em> an STI, which is why guessing is risky.<\/p>\n\n\n

3. Sexually transmitted infections.<\/strong> Chlamydia and gonorrhea are classic causes of abnormal discharge and painful urination in both men and women \u2014 and they’re frequently silent, so symptoms may be subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n

Why You Can’t Tell by Symptoms Alone<\/h2>\n\n\n

Here’s the honest truth: these conditions look far too similar to separate by feel. A burning sensation could be a simple UTI or it could be gonorrhea. Discharge could be a yeast infection or chlamydia. The only reliable way to know is a quick test \u2014 which then points to the correct<\/em> treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Danger of Self-Medicating<\/h2>\n\n\n

Taking leftover or over-the-counter antibiotics “just in case” is one of the most common mistakes we see. It can mask symptoms without curing the real problem, lead to the wrong drug for the wrong bug, and fuel antibiotic resistance. Worse, an untreated STI can quietly damage fertility while you assume it’s “just a UTI.”<\/p>\n\n\n

Get the Right Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n

A short visit sorts it out. Depending on your symptoms we may check for a UTI<\/a>, look into vaginitis<\/a> or other genital infections<\/a>, or run an STI screen<\/a> \u2014 then treat exactly what’s there.<\/p>\n\n\n
