Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in Nigeria, and sadly one of the leading causes of cancer death among Nigerian women. The hardest part is that it is largely preventable — yet many cases are still found late.

What Causes Cervical Cancer?

Almost all cervical cancers are caused by long-lasting infection with high-risk types of HPV — especially HPV 16 and 18, which are responsible for about 70% of cases. The virus is extremely common; what matters is whether an infection persists and quietly changes cervical cells over many years.

Why So Many Cases Are Found Late

Cervical cancer develops slowly and silently. In its early, most treatable stages it usually causes no symptoms. Without regular screening, it is often only noticed once it has advanced — when treatment is harder. This is why prevention and early detection save lives.

The Two-Layer Defence

Nigerian women have two powerful tools:

The HPV vaccine — prevents most infections that cause cervical cancer, especially when given before exposure

Regular screening — a Pap smear can catch pre-cancerous changes early, long before they become cancer

Used together, these can prevent the vast majority of cervical cancers.

At Mascot Healthcare in Akoka (Yaba), we offer the HPV vaccine, Pap smear screening, and full women’s health care. Read more in our complete HPV vaccine guide.

Protect Yourself Against Cervical Cancer

Medically reviewed by Dr. Lawal Taiye (MBBS, Ibadan) — Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka, Lagos.

Cervical cancer is among the leading cancers in Nigerian women — and largely preventable.
