At Mascot Healthcare, we believe knowledge is key to staying healthy and making informed choices, especially when it comes to your genes.

What Is Genotype AC?

Genotype AC means a person carries one normal hemoglobin gene (A) and one abnormal hemoglobin C gene (C). It is not sickle cell disease, but it is still important to understand what it means for your health and your future family planning.

Is Genotype AC a Problem?

For most people with AC, there are no major health issues. In fact, many don’t even know they have it unless they take a genotype test. AC is generally considered a carrier state — like AS — but it is not the same as sickle cell trait.

That said, in rare cases, individuals with AC may experience:

Mild anemia

Muscle cramps or weakness during intense physical activity

Mild hematuria (blood in urine)

These symptoms are uncommon and often go unnoticed.

What Happens If Someone With AC Wants to Marry?

This is where genotype awareness becomes important.

Here’s what can happen depending on the partner’s genotype:

AC + AA = 50% chance of children with AA, 50% with AC (Generally safe)

AC + AS = Risk of having a child with SC genotype (a form of sickle cell disorder)

AC + AC = Risk of CC genotypes in children(Not advisable)

AC + SS = Very high risk of severe sickle cell disorders (Not advisable)

That’s why genotype screening before marriage is crucial. It helps couples plan and avoid the risk of having children with severe hemoglobin disorders.

Prevalence in Nigeria

Based on 2018 National DHS data:

Among children aged 6–59 months:

HbAA: ~77.2%

HbAS: ~19.7%

HbAC: ~1.6%

HbSS/SC (sickle cell disease): ~1.3%

Extrapolated nationally, that corresponds to roughly 1.6% of individuals with Hb AC.

How Do I Know My Genotype?

A simple blood test at Mascot Healthcare can tell you your genotype.
